Gamer Feature: Lui Elliott

Lui moves between two worlds—skating and gaming—with the same energy and obsessive pursuit of perfection. Whether he’s on a board or behind a controller, he’s chasing that feeling—the one that makes all the frustration worth it, the one that makes you say, just one more try. We found that out while filming take 17 of him nose sliding the same lip. But we got the shot, and that's what matters.

From the Skatepark to the Screen

For Lui, skateboarding has always been about the grind—he knows the feeling of throwing himself at a trick for hours, days, even years, just to land it once. The rush of finally getting it is unmatched, a fleeting high that keeps him coming back. Gaming, he says, is the same. The challenge, the endless repetition, the tiny improvements that turn frustration into mastery—it’s all connected.

“You’re almost there. You get closer, you get closer, and then finally, you land it. And that moment? It’s everything,” he says. “Then, right after, you go again.”

Lui doesn’t just play games—he attacks them the way he attacks skating. He sees every failed attempt as experience points, every restart as a lesson. He calls it XP farming—whether it’s a switch flip or a speedrun, the formula is the same: try, fail, learn, repeat.

The Origin Story

But what about gaming? Where did that start?

“My dad was into video games when I was younger. He always said how bad they are, but he played them all the time—made no sense,” Lui laughs. “I remember he bought my brother and me a GameBoy Color. He was more of a Charizard guy, I’m more of a Blastoise guy, and from then on, we played every single day.”

From those early days of Pokémon battles to late-night gaming sessions, it became more than just a pastime—it was a part of who he was. Like skateboarding, gaming was always about skill, strategy, and finding ways to push the limits.

The Escape That Became a Lifestyle

Skating shaped Lui’s life, but gaming gave him some more balance. With skateboarding, everything in his world revolved around it—his work, his friends, his entire identity. But gaming? Gaming let him step away from all of that.

“When I pick up a controller, I don’t have to talk about skating. I don’t have to think about my next trick. I can just be in the game, in a whole different world.”

It’s not just an escape—it’s a different kind of challenge, one that pushes his skills in a different way. Lui isn’t just chasing tricks; he’s chasing world records, grinding levels, and finding new ways to compete.

Why Skateboarding and Gaming Will Always Be Connected

There’s a reason skaters gravitate toward games, especially ones that require skill, timing, and creativity. Speedrunners, competitive gamers, and skaters share a mindset—an addiction to improvement, an obsession with getting things just right.

“We call it XP in skating. Just like in a game, the more you do something, the better you get at it. It’s all about putting in the time.”

Lui sees the parallels everywhere. Skaters and gamers live for the process, not just the result. Both communities thrive on pushing limits, on breaking what seems impossible, on hitting that perfect moment that makes all the frustration worth it.

And that’s why Lui will never stop doing either. Whether it’s a new trick or a new game, the chase is what keeps him going. One more try. Always.
